The fight was quite uneven because majority of the Sikhs were non-combatants, old men and women and children. They were not able to implement their famous hit and run strategy. Afghans were able to beat the Sikhs in hand to hand fight but Sikh soldiers fought very hard by keeping their women and children in the middle and moved down as a living fortress from Kup to Barnala where they thought that Ala Singh of Patiala would assist them. Despite the admirable fighting spirit of the Sikhs, Afghans killed more than 20,000 Sikhs near Kup Rorian, which is famous as Wada Ghallughara (Major Holocast).
